PPF thickness is measured in mil (thousandths of an inch). Most quality PPF films are 6 to 8 mil thick. How Does Paint Protection Film Work?
PPF works through a combination of energy absorption, surface chemistry, and material elasticity.
Energy absorption: When a stone chip impacts PPF, the polyurethane base layer deforms to absorb the kinetic energy of the impact. The flexibility of the film spreads the impact across a larger area and reduces the concentrated force at the point of impact to below the threshold that would chip bare paint. The film may show a small indentation but the paint underneath remains undamaged.
Self-healing: The elastomeric polymer in the clear coat layer has shape memory. When deformed by light abrasion — a swirl mark from washing, a light scratch from contact - the polymer returns to its original smooth shape when exposed to heat. Sunlight warming the film surface activates this recovery. So does pouring warm water over the scratched area.

Paint Protection Film Installation Process at Carbon and Chrome
Step 1 - Paint Inspection
The car is inspected under LED lighting. We check paint condition, identify any existing defects, and assess whether any paint correction is needed before installation. Defects under the film remain visible after installation — this step determines whether additional prep work is required.
Step 2 - Surface Preparation
Thorough wash with pH-neutral shampoo using two-bucket method. Chemical decontamination to remove iron particles. Clay bar treatment to remove bonded contamination. The surface must be genuinely clean — not just visually clean — before film goes on.
Step 3 - Film Cutting
For popular car models, pre-cut kits are used. For custom coverage or less common models, film is cut on site using a plotter. Accurate cutting ensures the film fits panel edges correctly with minimal trimming required after application.
Step 4 - Application
Film is applied wet using a slip solution. Positioned on the panel, squeegeed flat from the centre outward, and edges wrapped around the panel or trimmed and heat-sealed depending on the panel geometry. Each panel is worked individually. Bumpers, mirrors, and headlight covers are the most technically demanding areas.
Step 5 - Curing
24 to 48 hours for the adhesive to cure properly. During this period the car should not be washed or exposed to heavy rain. After curing the film is fully bonded and normal washing can resume.
Step 6 - Final Inspection
Every installation is checked under bright lighting before handover. Bubbles, lifting edges, poor panel fit, and uneven seam placement are corrected before the car is collected.

Paint Protection Film Maintenance - How to Keep It in Good Condition
Wash regularly with pH-neutral shampoo. Every 2 weeks in normal conditions. More frequently during monsoon when road grime accumulates faster. Use a two-bucket method and clean microfibre wash mitts to avoid introducing scratches into the film surface.
Avoid automatic car washes with rotating brushes. The brushes cause swirl marks in the PPF clear coat surface, reducing clarity and self-healing performance over time. Touchless automatic washes are acceptable.
