New Car Protection After Dussehra: PPF vs Ceramic Coating Explained

9 min read

Dussehra is when most car deliveries happen in India. Dealers clear festive stock, manufacturers push production, and buyers take delivery at a volume that makes this the busiest week of the automotive calendar. If you just took delivery of a new car, or are expecting one in the next few days, you are in the same position as thousands of Pune car owners every October.

You have showroom paint. You want to keep it that way.

This guide explains exactly what the two main paint protection options do, which one your specific situation calls for, and what the process looks like if you are coming to Carbon and Chrome in Viman Nagar.

What Happens to New Car Paint Without Protection

A car leaves the factory with a multi-layer paint system: primer, base coat (the colour), and a clearcoat of 50 to 100 microns that provides the gloss and protects the colour underneath.

In Pune's conditions, that clearcoat begins to accumulate damage within weeks of delivery.

Stone chips from Pune's roads. On Nagar Road, Solapur highway, and the Pune-Mumbai Expressway approach, stone chips from road grit and debris impact the front panels of every car at speed. One chip on a new car bonnet in the first month of ownership is not rare. It is the expected outcome for an unprotected car driven on these routes.

Borewell water mineral deposits. Most residential societies in Viman Nagar, Kharadi, and Kondhwa use borewell water for washing. This water contains calcium and mineral deposits that, when they evaporate on paint, leave etching marks. On a new white or silver car, water spot etching from repeated borewell water washing becomes visible within a few months without a protective coating.

Bird droppings and tree sap. Both contain acids that etch into clearcoat within 24 to 48 hours if left on the surface in Pune's temperatures. A new car parked under a tree or in an open area is particularly exposed.

UV and heat. Pune's sun across the post-monsoon dry season into summer is intense. UV radiation breaks down the clearcoat's molecular structure over time, producing fade and oxidation. Dark colours like black, deep blue, and red are more visibly affected.

None of this is a product defect. It is what happens to unprotected clearcoat in Indian driving and parking conditions.

What PPF Does

Paint Protection Film (PPF) is a thermoplastic polyurethane film that bonds to the clearcoat and physically covers the painted surface.

It does several things that a coating cannot:

Physical impact absorption. PPF is thick enough (typically 150 to 250 microns) to absorb stone chips and minor road debris impacts that would otherwise reach the clearcoat. The film takes the chip; the paint underneath is undamaged.

Self-healing surface. PPF's topcoat layer heals minor surface scratches when exposed to heat. A scratch from a fingernail or a light brush contact heals by itself when the car is washed with warm water or left in sunlight. This is the property that makes PPF different from any conventional paint protection product.

Edge-to-edge clearcoat replacement. Over the zones it covers, PPF effectively replaces the clearcoat as the car's outermost protective layer. The original clearcoat is preserved underneath in factory condition.

Transferable warranty. Premium PPF brands carry manufacturer warranties of 5 to 10 years. The XPEL Ultimate Plus, for example, carries a 10-year warranty. These warranties cover delamination, yellowing, and defects in the film material.

For a new car, PPF makes the most sense on the panels that face the highest impact risk: the bonnet, front bumper, front fenders, headlights, and mirrors. These are the surfaces that encounter stone chips and debris from the road surface at speed.

PPF on a new car starts from Rs 55,000 for front-zone coverage on a hatchback or small sedan. Full-body coverage on a mid-size SUV is priced higher and varies by film brand and coverage area.

What Ceramic Coating Does

Ceramic coating is a liquid silicon dioxide (SiO2) polymer that is applied to the paint surface and cures into a semi-permanent glass-like layer bonded chemically to the clearcoat.

It does not provide physical impact protection against stone chips. What it does:

Hydrophobic surface. Water, rain, and borewell water bead up and run off a ceramic-coated surface rather than sitting and evaporating with mineral deposits. This eliminates the water spot etching problem for Pune car owners washing with borewell water.

UV protection. The ceramic matrix reflects and absorbs UV radiation before it reaches the clearcoat. This slows the oxidation and colour fade that affects dark and saturated paint colours over years of outdoor parking.

Chemical resistance. Bird droppings, tree sap, and road tar do not bond to a ceramic-coated surface the way they bond to bare clearcoat. They remain on the surface and can be removed before etching occurs. Without coating, the same contaminants etch within hours in Pune temperatures.

Gloss enhancement. Ceramic coating increases the paint's reflective depth. On a new car, the difference is visible. The paint looks deeper and richer than factory finish under direct light.

Reduced maintenance. A ceramic-coated car needs to be washed less frequently and cleaned more easily when washing is done. The hydrophobic surface sheds road dust and grime rather than holding it.

Ceramic coating on a new car starts from Rs 12,000 at Carbon and Chrome. Mid and long-duration coatings are priced higher depending on the product tier and warranty period.

As a Saint-Gobain authorised studio, the coatings we apply carry manufacturer-backed warranties. Our ceramic coating service covers the full range of available products. PPF vs Ceramic Coating: Which Does Your New Car Need?

The right answer depends on how you use the car.

If you drive on Pune's highways regularly: Your front panels accumulate stone chips. PPF on the front zone is the priority. Ceramic coating on the panels not covered by film gives you the hydrophobic and UV benefits on the rest of the car.

If you drive primarily in Pune's urban limits: Stone chip risk is lower at city speeds. Ceramic coating alone may be sufficient protection for the hydrophobic, UV, and chemical resistance benefits.

If you park outdoors permanently: UV protection matters more. Ceramic coating's UV blocking is relevant. PPF adds it on the front panels and the film itself has UV-blocking properties in its topcoat.

If your car is dark-coloured: Black, deep blue, and charcoal grey paint shows every water spot, swirl mark, and contaminant more than light colours. Dark cars benefit most visibly from both PPF (prevents chips that show as white marks against dark paint) and ceramic coating (prevents water spots that show as white mineral rings on dark paint).

If you want the maximum protection: PPF on the front zone plus ceramic coating over the entire car is the complete combination. Front panels get physical impact protection from the film and hydrophobic coverage from the coating applied over the film. The rest of the car gets the coating's full benefits.

This combination is what we recommend for new car owners who drive on Pune's highways and park outdoors. It addresses every paint threat the Pune environment produces.

What the Process Looks Like for a New Car

A new car is the best condition a car will ever be in for protection application. No paint correction is needed. The surface preparation is simpler. The film and coating bond to factory clearcoat without any pre-existing damage being locked in.

For a new car PPF installation at Carbon and Chrome:

The car is decontaminated (clay bar treatment even on a new car removes any transport or showroom contamination from the surface). Film is cut using computer-aided plotter templates specific to the car model and generation. Application takes one day for front zone coverage on a hatchback or sedan; one to two days for SUVs and full-body coverage. The car must not be washed for 48 hours after installation to allow the film to fully bond.

For a new car ceramic coating at Carbon and Chrome:

The surface is decontaminated and wiped with IPA (isopropyl alcohol) to remove any residues. Coating is applied panel by panel in a controlled workshop environment. Cure time is 24 hours before the car can be driven; final hardness develops over 7 days. No washing for 7 days after application.

For the combination (PPF then ceramic):

Film is installed first. After 48 hours of cure time, the ceramic coating is applied over the film panels and the remaining unfilmed panels. Total time: 2 to 3 days at the studio for a mid-size SUV.

Timing: Do This Before the First Wash

New car owners in Pune often receive the car from the dealer pre-washed at the showroom with whatever water and products the showroom uses. This is not paint damage, but it means the surface has already had one exposure before any protection is in place.

The right time to apply PPF or ceramic coating on a new car is as early as possible after delivery. Ideally in the first week. Every day the car sits unprotected in Pune is a day of borewell water wash residue, parking area bird droppings, and UV exposure accumulating on the clearcoat.

If you have already had the car for a few weeks, this does not mean the protection is no longer worth doing. It means a light decontamination step is added before application. The sooner, the better, but there is no cutoff point after which protection stops being worthwhile.

Dussehra Deliveries and What We See at the Studio

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I get PPF or ceramic coating on my new car first?

PPF first if you are getting both. Film goes on the paint surface; coating goes over the film and the remaining panels. If you are getting only one, choose based on your use: PPF for stone chip protection (highway drivers), ceramic for hydrophobic and UV protection (urban drivers who park outdoors).

How soon after delivery should I get my new car protected?

As soon as possible. Ideally in the first week. Every day of unprotected use in Pune adds borewell water exposure, UV exposure, and contamination to the clearcoat. A new car requires no paint correction before application, which is its main advantage: earlier means simpler, faster, and cleaner protection.

Does ceramic coating make PPF unnecessary on a new car?

No. Ceramic coating does not protect against stone chips. If you drive on Pune's highways, your front panels will accumulate chips without PPF regardless of how good the ceramic coating is. The two products address different threats and complement each other.

Is PPF or ceramic coating visible on a new car?

High-clarity PPF film is optically transparent. The paint colour and finish are unchanged. The film edges at panel boundaries are visible in some lighting. Ceramic coating is invisible after curing; there is no film, only a chemical bond on the paint surface.

What is the cost of new car protection at Carbon and Chrome in Pune?

PPF for front-zone coverage starts from Rs 55,000 depending on film brand and car size. Ceramic coating starts from Rs 12,000 depending on coating tier. Combination packages are priced based on car size, paint condition, and coverage selected. WhatsApp us your car model for a specific quote.

Which new cars does Carbon and Chrome work on?
