Toyota Fortuner Transformation - From Standard White to Sedona Red

This is a 2008 Toyota Fortuner that came into our Viman Nagar studio looking like any other white Fortuner you would see on Pune's roads. It left looking like nothing else on those roads. Full colour respray in Land Rover Sedona Red, Lexus GX front conversion, custom alloy wheels, aggressive body styling, and PPF to protect the new paint.
This is the full story of how it was built - what was done, why each decision was made, and what the result looks like.
The Starting Point - A Stock 2008 Toyota Fortuner
The car that arrived was a 2008 Toyota Fortuner in standard white. Factory condition. Original white paint with visible wear from years of daily use. Factory 17-inch alloy wheels. No modifications. Nothing wrong with it mechanically - but visually, it looked exactly like every other first-generation Fortuner still on the road.
The customer wanted something completely different. Not just a detail or a refresh. A full transformation that changed the car's identity. A Fortuner that turned heads rather than blending into traffic.
What followed was a project that covered custom painting, a full front conversion, body styling, wheel and tyre upgrades, lighting upgrades, and PPF on the new paint.
The Colour Decision - Land Rover Sedona Red
The first and most fundamental decision in any full transformation is the colour.
The customer chose Land Rover Sedona Red. This is not a standard Toyota colour. It is a rich, deep burgundy-red with metallic depth that looks completely different from the standard reds available from Japanese manufacturers. In Pune's light - particularly in the golden hour before sunset - the Sedona Red shifts from a deep maroon to a warm burgundy depending on the angle.
The paint used was not a local substitute. Sedona Red requires a high-quality multi-coat process to get the metallic depth right. A straight single-coat application on this colour looks flat and misses the characteristic depth that makes it special. We sourced premium paint material and applied it through a full respray process in our enclosed paint booth.
The paint process:
Full strip-down of the car's panels for access
Surface preparation — sanding, primer coat
Base coat application — multiple layers of Sedona Red
Clear coat application for gloss and protection
Wet sanding and buffing after curing
Machine polishing to achieve the final finish
The Saint-Gobain technician visible in the photos was part of the machine polishing stage - two technicians working simultaneously on different panels to achieve a consistent finish across the entire car.
The Front Conversion - Lexus GX Styling Kit
A colour change alone transforms a car. A front conversion transforms its identity.
The front bumper and grille were replaced with a Lexus GX-inspired styling kit. The GX grille design - with its distinctive spindle pattern - gives the Fortuner a front fascia that looks nothing like the original. Combined with the Sedona Red paint, the car no longer reads as a first-generation Fortuner from the front. It reads as something purpose-built.
What the front conversion included:
Full front bumper replacement with GX-style unit
Spindle-pattern grille in gloss black and chrome finish
Bullet-style projector headlights replacing the factory units
Projector fog lights with integrated DRL strips
The DRL strips run along the lower edges of the fog light housings and activate automatically with the ignition. Combined with the projector headlights and the GX grille, the front of the car has a visual presence significantly beyond what the factory Fortuner delivers.
Body Styling - Fender Flares, Side Steps, and Gloss Black Treatment
The side profile transformation combined Sedona Red with gloss black across every trim element.
Fender flares: Wide-body fender flares were fitted to all four wheel arches. These serve both aesthetic and functional purposes — the wider flares accommodate the larger JTI alloy and Roadcruza tyre combination without rubbing, and they give the car a significantly more aggressive stance. All fender flares were painted in gloss black to match the body trim treatment.
Gloss black treatment: Mirror caps, side cladding, door handles, and all exterior trim pieces were painted in gloss black. The Sedona Red and gloss black combination creates a visual contrast that is more distinctive than either colour alone. This two-tone treatment is what gives the side profile its cohesive look.
Side steps: Side steps were installed for both visual grounding and practical access given the increased ride height from the larger tyres. Finished in gloss black to match the trim treatment.
Side ladder and side box: A roof-access ladder and side-mounted storage box were fitted to the rear quarter. Finished in gloss black to match the overall treatment. These give the car an expedition-ready visual character.
Monster spoiler: A large rear spoiler was fitted to the boot lid. Styled for maximum visual aggression rather than aerodynamic function — this spoiler changes the rear silhouette significantly and completes the transformation from standard Fortuner to something custom.
Wheels and Tyres - JTI 19-Inch Alloys with Roadcruza All-Terrain
The factory 17-inch alloys were removed and replaced with JTI 19-inch alloys in a satin/bronze finish.
JTI alloys in this design have a multi-spoke pattern with a bronze-satin finish that works well with both the Sedona Red paint and the gloss black trim treatment. The combination of three tones — maroon, black, and bronze - across the car is what makes the colour scheme work at a distance.
Roadcruza RA1100 all-terrain tyres were fitted. All-terrain tyres on a Fortuner serve both visual and functional purposes. Visually they add to the expedition character of the build. Functionally they give the car capability on mixed surfaces - relevant for a vehicle that may be used for trips toward Lonavala, Satara, or the Sahyadri hill routes from Pune.
The tyre lettering is displayed outward - white letter sidewalls are standard on this tyre and add to the visual impact of the wider stance created by the fender flares.
Lighting Upgrades - Front and Rear
Front lighting: Bullet-style projector headlights replaced the factory units. Projector headlights produce a more focused, higher-quality beam pattern than the factory halogen reflector setup on the 2008 Fortuner. Combined with the DRL strips in the fog light housings, the front lighting signature is completely different from the factory car.
Rear lighting: BMW-style scanning LED tail lights were fitted. The scanning effect - where the LED indicator sweeps across the tail light rather than flashing uniformly - gives the rear of the car a premium, modern character. A scanning number plate light with the Fortuner name was also fitted, which illuminates the badge name when in use.
A rear reflector strip and brake light were added to tie the rear styling together. Combined with the monster spoiler, the rear of the car now has visual presence that matches the aggressive front fascia.
Interior - Carbon Fibre LCD Steering Wheel
The interior upgrade focused on the driving interface - the steering wheel.
The factory steering wheel was replaced with an LCD carbon fibre unit. This steering wheel has an integrated LCD display that shows vehicle information and controls driving settings. The carbon fibre finish on the wheel matches the sporty exterior transformation.
A steering wheel this distinctive changes how the car feels to drive daily. Combined with the visual transformation of the exterior, the car feels purpose-built from the inside as well as the outside.
Paint Protection Film - Protecting the Sedona Red Finish
After the full respray and polishing, PPF was applied to the high-impact panels.
A full custom respray in a premium colour like Sedona Red represents significant investment. Stone chips on that finish are not just cosmetic damage - they are damage to work that took days to complete and cannot be touched up with a factory colour chip pen. PPF on a fresh respray makes complete sense.
PPF was applied to the bonnet, front bumper, front fenders, and door edges - the panels that take the most stone chip and abrasion damage in daily driving. The film is invisible over the deep maroon paint. You cannot tell it is there when looking at the finished car.
The technician in Image 6 is applying PPF to the door panel using a blue squeegee. Saint-Gobain PPF branding is visible on the studio wall in the background - this is our authorised Saint-Gobain installation at work.
The combination of a premium respray plus PPF protection means this Sedona Red finish is built to last. Stone chips from the Pune-Mumbai Expressway or Nagar Road will hit the film, not the new paint.
The Result - A Fortuner That Stands Apart
The 2008 Fortuner that arrived in standard white left as a Sedona Red transformation with Lexus GX front, custom alloys, aggressive body styling, scanning LED lights, and PPF protection.
What makes this build work is the coherence of the decisions. Sedona Red and gloss black throughout. Bronze JTI alloys that tie the warm tone into the wheels. All-terrain tyres that match the expedition character of the side box and ladder. GX-inspired front that elevates the front fascia to something newer and more distinctive.
