Ceramic Coating Maintenance Guide - How to Keep Your Coating Performing in Pune


Most ceramic coating failures are not product failures. They are maintenance failures. A quality ceramic coating from 3M or Gyeon applied by a certified studio will last its full 2 to 5 year warranty period if the car is maintained correctly. The same coating applied to the same car, maintained incorrectly, will show degraded hydrophobic performance within 12 to 18 months.


This guide covers exactly what to do - and what not to do - to keep a ceramic coating performing at its best in Pune's specific conditions. The advice here applies to every ceramic and graphene coating we apply at Carbon and Chrome, and it is what we walk every customer through before they collect their car.


The First 30 Days After Ceramic Coating - What to Do and Avoid


The first 30 days after ceramic coating application is the most important period for the coating's long-term performance. During this time the coating is completing its cure — developing its full hardness and chemical bond strength. What happens during this period directly affects how the coating performs for the rest of its life.


First 48 hours: Do not wash the car. Do not expose it to rain. Park in a covered area if possible. The coating needs undisturbed time to begin the initial cure. Contact with water during the first 48 hours can leave water marks that become permanent if the coating cures around them.


If bird droppings land on the car during this period, remove them immediately using a damp microfibre cloth with gentle blotting pressure - do not rub. Leaving acidic deposits on a fresh coating during the cure period can cause etching.


First 7 days: Continue avoiding washing where possible. If the car gets unavoidably dirty - monsoon mud, heavy dust - a gentle rinse with clean water is acceptable but avoid any contact washing or pressure washing.


First 30 days: Hand wash only with pH-neutral shampoo. No automatic car washes. No wax, sealant, or any additional product applied over the coating. No alkaline or acid-based cleaners anywhere on the painted surfaces. No machine polishing.


The coating reaches its full hardness over 2 to 4 weeks depending on temperature and humidity. Pune's summer heat actually accelerates curing - a coating applied in April or May in Pune reaches full hardness faster than the same coating applied in December.


How to Wash a Ceramic-Coated Car Correctly


This is the most important ongoing maintenance habit. Most ceramic coating degradation in everyday cars comes from incorrect washing technique - specifically from introducing swirl marks into the coating surface through poor washing practice.


Washing frequency: Every 2 weeks in normal conditions. More frequently during Pune's monsoon when road grime accumulates faster. Less frequently in dry winter months if the car is garaged and accumulation is slow. The goal is to wash before contamination has time to bond to the coating surface.


The two-bucket method: Two buckets - one with pH-neutral shampoo solution, one with clean rinse water. Wash the car panel by panel using a clean microfibre wash mitt. After washing each panel, rinse the mitt in the clean water bucket before reloading with shampoo solution. This prevents contaminated water from going back onto the paint and causing swirl marks.


Pre-rinse always: Before making contact with the car, rinse it thoroughly with water to loosen and remove as much loose dirt as possible. Never make contact with a dry dirty car - even with a clean microfibre, wiping dust on a dry surface causes micro-scratches in the coating.


pH-neutral shampoo only: This is non-negotiable on a ceramic-coated car. Alkaline shampoos and general-purpose cleaners degrade the SiO2 matrix of the coating. The difference between a coating that lasts 5 years and one that degrades in 2 years is often as simple as which shampoo was used for the 100-plus washes during the ownership period.


Drying: Dry with a clean, soft microfibre drying towel immediately after washing. Air drying on a ceramic-coated car still leaves water spots in Pune's hard water conditions — the coating's hydrophobic properties reduce water spotting significantly but do not eliminate it entirely when water is left to evaporate.


What not to use: Automatic car washes with rotating brushes. These cause swirl marks in the coating surface every single time. Even one visit to a brush-type automatic car wash undoes weeks of careful washing. Touchless automatic washes are acceptable if necessary but hand washing delivers better results.


Ceramic Coating Maintenance in Pune's Specific Conditions


Pune's climate creates specific maintenance challenges that a generic maintenance guide does not address.


Hard water: Pune's tap water and overhead tank water leave mineral deposits on paint and coating surfaces when water evaporates. Even a ceramic-coated car washed with tap water and left to air-dry will develop water spots over time. The fix: dry immediately after every wash with a microfibre drying towel. Do not let tap water dry on the coating surface.


Monsoon - June to September: During monsoon, road grime and contamination from flooded roads hit the car surface daily. Wash every 7 to 10 days during monsoon rather than every 2 weeks. After driving through flooded roads or heavy mud, rinse the car as soon as possible rather than leaving monsoon contamination to sit on the coating.


The good news: ceramic coating's hydrophobic properties are most visible during monsoon rain. Water sheets off the bonnet dramatically at driving speeds and the car stays cleaner between washes than an uncoated car in the same conditions.


Summer - March to June: Bird droppings bake onto surfaces faster in summer heat. In June at 40 degrees Celsius, a bird dropping on a ceramic-coated car needs to be removed within a few hours - not the next day. The coating provides more time than bare paint but not unlimited time. Keep a spray detailer and clean microfibre in the car during summer for immediate removal of bird droppings and tree sap.


Construction dust: Fine concrete and silica dust from Pune's ongoing construction settles on car surfaces constantly. Never wipe construction dust off a dry surface - always rinse first to float the particles off before any contact. Graphene coating's mild anti-static properties reduce dust adhesion slightly, but the pre-rinse rule applies to both graphene and standard ceramic.


Winter - November to February: Pune's winter is the least challenging season for a ceramic-coated car. Lower humidity, less rain, and moderate temperatures mean contamination accumulates more slowly. Washing every 3 to 4 weeks is usually sufficient during winter for garaged cars. Cars parked outdoors still need regular washing but can stretch intervals slightly compared to monsoon.


What to Never Do on a Ceramic-Coated Car


Automatic car washes with rotating brushes: Already mentioned, worth repeating. This is the single most damaging thing for a ceramic coating in everyday use. The brushes cause swirl marks in the coating surface that reduce optical clarity, compromise water sheeting performance, and accumulate into visible paint dullness over time. Never, for any reason.


Alkaline or acid-based cleaners on painted surfaces: Wheel cleaners, engine degreasers, all-purpose cleaners diluted incorrectly, and kitchen cleaning products all fall into this category. These products break down the SiO2 matrix of the coating. Use them only where specified - wheels, engine bay - and keep them away from painted panels.


Machine polishing: Machine polishing removes material from the clear coat surface — and from the ceramic coating on top of it. Polishing a ceramic-coated car removes the coating. If paint correction is needed after coating, the coating in that area needs to be removed and reapplied. Avoid abrasive products on coated surfaces entirely.


Wax or paint sealant over the coating: Applying wax or sealant over ceramic coating does not help and may interfere with the coating's performance. The coating is the protection layer — adding wax on top does not enhance it.


Parking under trees in summer: Tree sap and bird droppings are the two most damaging contaminants for ceramic coating in Pune's summer. If parking under trees is unavoidable, check and clean the car surface more frequently during summer months.


Petrol station pressure washers: High-pressure jets aimed directly at panel edges can lift film edges on PPF-coated cars and in theory stress ceramic coating at the micro level over time. Standard garden hose pressure is sufficient for rinsing. If using a pressure washer, keep the nozzle at a reasonable distance and avoid sustained high-pressure on any one spot.


Removing Bird Droppings and Tree Sap from Ceramic Coating


Bird droppings and tree sap are acidic. On ceramic coating they are significantly easier to remove than on bare paint - the coating's chemical resistance slows the etching process and prevents the deposits from bonding as strongly.


But easier to remove does not mean harmless if left. In Pune's summer heat, bird droppings can etch into the ceramic coating surface within hours. The coating protects the paint underneath but the coating itself can be damaged by sustained acid exposure.


How to remove bird droppings: Soak a clean microfibre cloth in water and place it over the dropping for 30 seconds to soften it. Gently lift and blot - do not rub. The softened dropping lifts off the coating surface without scratching. Follow with a rinse of the area.

Do not try to wipe off a dry bird dropping. The uric acid crystals in a dried dropping act as an abrasive and scratching the coating surface while removing a dry dropping is worse than the dropping itself.


How to remove tree sap: Tree sap that has not hardened responds to isopropyl alcohol (IPA) on a clean microfibre. Apply IPA to the cloth, not directly to the car. Gently dab the sap - do not rub. Repeat until the sap is removed. Rinse the area with water afterwards.

Hardened tree sap that has been baking in the sun is more difficult. If it does not respond to IPA treatment, bring the car in - forcing hardened sap off with abrasion damages the coating surface.


Annual Maintenance Inspection - Why It Matters


Every ceramic coating at Carbon and Chrome includes a recommendation for an annual maintenance inspection. This is not just a sales visit - it serves a specific technical purpose.


Over 12 months of washing, driving, and environmental exposure, the ceramic coating's topmost layer gradually loses some of its hydrophobic performance. The coating is still present and still protecting the paint, but the water beading becomes less aggressive than it was when first applied.


What happens at an annual inspection:

The car is washed and decontaminated. The coating surface is inspected under LED lighting for any areas where the coating has been compromised - scratches through the coating, sections where incorrect cleaning products have degraded the matrix, or areas of high impact exposure.


A ceramic coating booster - a light top-up product compatible with the base coating — is applied to refresh the hydrophobic performance and add another layer of protection to the coating surface. The booster does not rebuild a worn coating, but it significantly extends the coating's effective performance life when applied annually.


What the booster delivers: After a booster application, water beading returns to close to the original level. The surface feels slick again. The visual gloss is refreshed. For a 5-year ceramic coating, annual booster applications extend the coating's effective life to its full warranty period and beyond.


For graphene coating specifically, the booster also refreshes the anti-static properties that reduce dust adhesion.


How to Tell if Your Ceramic Coating is Still Performing


The simplest test: pour a small amount of water on the bonnet and observe how it behaves.


Coating performing well: Water beads into tight, round droplets that roll off the surface at a slight tilt or when the car moves. The droplets are small and round, not flat and spread. The surface feels slick when wet.


Coating degrading: Water still beads but the droplets are larger, flatter, and slower to roll. The surface feels less slick. After washing, water spots form more readily than they did when the coating was new.


Coating significantly degraded or gone: Water sheets across the surface rather than beading. The paint feels rough or less smooth than it did when coated. Water spots appear within minutes of the car getting wet.


If your coating shows signs of degradation before its warranty period ends, bring the car in for an inspection. Depending on how early this is caught and what caused it, the coating may be restorable through decontamination and booster application without a full recoat.


Products to Use on a Ceramic-Coated Car


pH-neutral car shampoo: The most important product. Any major automotive brand offering a pH-neutral or ceramic-coating-safe shampoo is appropriate. Avoid anything labelled as a "wash and wax" - the wax elements do not enhance the coating and may interfere with it.


Ceramic spray detailer: A spray detailer compatible with ceramic coating can be used between washes to remove light dust and fingerprints without a full wash. Spray on, wipe with a clean microfibre, buff off. Keeps the car looking clean between wash days and adds a small amount of hydrophobic top-up with each use.


Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) at 70% concentration: For removing tree sap, bird dropping residue, and stubborn contamination from the coating surface. Applied on a cloth, not directly on the car. Do not use regularly as a general cleaner - use it specifically for contamination removal.


Clean microfibre cloths and mitts: The physical tools matter as much as the products. Dirty, contaminated microfibre causes swirl marks. Wash microfibre cloths separately from other laundry, without fabric softener, and replace them when they show signs of contamination or wear.
