Custom Paint Job Cost in Pune 2026 - What Actually Determines the Price

Custom paint job pricing in Pune ranges from ₹15,000 for a single panel respray to over ₹2,00,000 for a full body colour change on a large SUV using premium paint. That range reflects genuine differences in scope, not just studio markup. This guide explains every factor that determines the cost of a custom paint job in Pune so you can compare quotes accurately and understand exactly what you are paying for.

What Counts as a Custom Paint Job

The term covers several different types of work. Understanding which category your job falls into is the first step to understanding the cost.

Panel repair and respray: A single damaged panel - bonnet, door, fender - is repaired, colour matched, and resprayed to match the rest of the car. This is the most common type of custom paint work at Carbon and Chrome. The goal is invisible repair - a panel that matches the surrounding paint so well that the repair is undetectable.

Full body respray - same colour: Every panel on the car is stripped, prepared, and resprayed in the original colour or the closest available match. Done when the paint has deteriorated uniformly across the car - fading, oxidation, or significant damage across multiple panels.

Full body colour change: Every panel is resprayed in a new colour that differs from the factory colour. The most involved type of paint work. Requires disassembly of exterior trim, respraying of door jambs, boot interior, and bonnet underside to ensure the colour change is complete and consistent. This is what was done on the Fortuner transformation - white to Land Rover Sedona Red.

Specialty finishes: Matte, satin, two-tone, pearl, colour-shift, and custom graphics. Each requires specific paint products, application techniques, and preparation that differ from standard gloss finishes.

Factor 1: How Much of the Car Needs Painting

The single biggest variable in custom paint job cost is how many panels are being painted.

Single panel: Bonnet, one door, one fender. The smallest scope. Cost covers preparation of that panel, colour matching, respray, and blending into adjacent panels where needed.

Multiple panels: Two to five panels from an accident or localised damage. Each panel adds preparation, masking, painting, and blending time.

Full body - same colour: Every exterior panel including door jambs, boot interior edge, and bonnet underside. More time and material than multiple panels but not requiring a full colour change process.

Full body colour change: Everything in full body respray plus disassembly of all exterior trim, respraying of interior panel edges, and complete colour consistency throughout. The most time-intensive scope at Carbon and Chrome.

The cost difference between a single panel and a full body colour change on the same car is typically 8 to 15 times - not because of markup but because the labour and material genuinely scale with the scope.

Factor 2: Your Car's Size

Larger cars have more surface area. More surface area means more paint material, more masking material, more preparation time, and more application time. This affects cost across every scope category.

Hatchbacks: Maruti Swift, Hyundai i20, Tata Tiago. Smallest panel surfaces. Lowest material and labour cost per scope category.

Sedans: Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Volkswagen Virtus, Skoda Slavia. Moderately larger panels than hatchbacks.

Compact SUVs: Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Tata Nexon, MG Hector. Larger surfaces than sedans. Bonnets, doors, and fenders are all bigger.

Full-size SUVs: Toyota Fortuner, Mahindra Thar, Innova Crysta, MG Gloster. Significantly more surface area. A Fortuner full body colour change requires substantially more paint and time than a Swift full body colour change.

Luxury vehicles: BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Porsche. Similar or larger surface area to full-size SUVs but requiring additional care given the specialty paint finishes and the cost of any error. Luxury vehicle paint work is priced at a premium that reflects the skill and care required.

Factor 3: The Paint Used

Not all automotive paint is the same product. The type and quality of paint used directly affects the cost of the job and the quality of the result.

Standard solid colours: Single-coat solid colours like white, black, and basic reds. The most straightforward to apply. Lower material cost, faster application.

Metallic paints: The most common factory finish on modern Indian cars. Metallic particles in the paint create the shimmer effect that varies with viewing angle. Requires more careful application than solid colours to ensure consistent metallic flop across panels.

Pearl and tri-coat paints: Three-layer finishes with a base coat, pearl or mica mid-coat, and clear coat. Matching these on repaired panels is significantly more difficult than matching solid or standard metallic colours. Tri-coat finishes require more skill and time to blend invisibly.

Specialty colours: Non-catalogue colours from other manufacturers - like the Land Rover Sedona Red applied to the Fortuner transformation at Carbon and Chrome - require sourcing paint from the specific manufacturer's range. These paints cost more per litre than standard automotive colours.

Matte and satin finishes: Require specific matte or satin clear coat rather than standard gloss clear. Application technique is different — matte finishes are less forgiving of uneven application than gloss. Post-application maintenance requirements are also different.

Premium paint brands: Professional automotive paint from BASF, PPG, Sikkens, and AkzoNobel performs better and lasts longer than generic paint products. Studios using premium paint brands charge more but deliver more consistent colour matching and longer-lasting results.

At Carbon and Chrome, colour matching is done using spectrophotometric measurement before any panel is painted. We measure the adjacent panels to find the exact formulation rather than matching by eye. On metallic and pearl finishes this is the only way to achieve an invisible repair.

Factor 4: Preparation Work Before Painting

This is the factor that most car owners do not account for when budgeting and the one that makes the biggest difference to the final result.

Paint goes on over whatever surface is prepared for it. A panel that has rust, dents, scratches, previous filler work, or old paint that is not properly keyed will not hold new paint correctly regardless of how good the paint is. Preparation involves everything needed to bring the panel to a condition where new paint will bond correctly and look right.

Dent removal: Minor dents can be removed with PDR (paintless dent repair) before painting. More significant dents require traditional metal working or body filler. The extent of dent repair needed directly affects preparation time and cost.

Rust treatment: Surface rust on the panel needs to be addressed before painting or it will bleed through the new paint within months. Rust removal, rust converter treatment, and primer sealing add time and material cost.

Old paint condition: If the existing paint is chalky, flaking, or poorly adhered, it needs to be stripped before new paint is applied. Painting over failing paint produces a failing paint job.

Filler work: Scratches and surface damage that cannot be removed by sanding require body filler. Filler application, shaping, and sanding to a level surface before primer is a time-consuming step that affects the overall job cost significantly.

Primer and sealer: Every panel gets primer before the colour coat. The number of primer coats, sanding between coats, and the type of sealer used affect both material cost and time.

Studios that quote low for paint jobs often skip or rush the preparation. A panel that looks good on the day of collection can show problems within 6 to 12 months - paint peeling, rust bleeding through, filler cracking - all from inadequate preparation. At Carbon and Chrome we assess the preparation needed during inspection and include it in the quote before any work begins.

Factor 5: Blending Into Adjacent Panels

On a single or multi-panel repair, blending is the process of feathering the new paint into the surrounding panels so the repair is invisible. This is one of the most skilled parts of automotive paint work and one of the most significant factors in whether a repair looks professional or obviously patched.

Perfect colour matching of a single panel is rarely achievable - paint fades and changes over time, and a new panel painted to the factory formula will look slightly different from the surrounding aged paint. Blending gradually feathers the new paint into the adjacent panels so there is no visible line between old and new.

Blending adds time and material cost. A single door repair that also blends into the front fender and rear quarter costs more than a single door repair with no blending. For invisible repairs on pearl, metallic, and tri-coat finishes, blending is usually necessary.

At Carbon and Chrome every repaired panel is checked against adjacent panels under different lighting conditions before the car is handed back. If the blend is not right, we address it before delivery.

Getting a Custom Paint Job Through Insurance in Pune

Most paint repairs from accidents or third-party damage are covered under comprehensive car insurance. Carbon and Chrome accepts insurance cases for denting and painting work.

The process at our studio:

Assessment: We inspect the damage and prepare a detailed estimate of the repair scope and cost.

Insurance claim: You submit the claim to your insurer with our estimate. The insurer either approves the estimate or sends a surveyor to assess the damage.

Approval and repair: Once approved, we proceed with the repair to the same standard as a cash job. The insurance approval does not change the preparation or quality of work.

Settlement: The insurer pays directly to the studio or reimburses you depending on the policy terms.

If your insurer's approved estimate is lower than our quote, we discuss the gap with you before starting. We do not reduce preparation or quality to fit an insufficient approved amount - we tell you what the job actually costs and what the insurance covers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a custom paint job cost in Pune?

Depends on scope, car size, paint type, and preparation needed. A single panel respray starts from approximately ₹8,000 on a hatchback. A full body colour change on a full-size SUV using a premium specialty colour can exceed ₹2,00,000. Get an inspection and quote before committing to any studio - a quote without seeing the car is a guess.

How long does a full body colour change take?

Typically 2 to 3 weeks depending on the car's size, the scope of disassembly required, paint drying and curing times between coats, and the complexity of the colour. We give a specific timeline after assessing the car and confirming the full scope.

Can you match my car's existing colour exactly for a panel repair?

In most cases yes, using spectrophotometric colour measurement. We measure the adjacent panels to find the exact current formulation - which may differ from the factory code due to fading over time. Pearl, tri-coat, and colour-shift finishes are more challenging to match invisibly than standard metallic colours. We tell you honestly what is achievable on your specific paint before starting.

Can I change my car's colour to any colour I want?

Yes. Standard automotive colours, metallics, pearls, mattes, satins, and specialty colours from any manufacturer's range are possible. The Land Rover Sedona Red on the Fortuner we painted is an example of a non-standard colour applied to a different brand's vehicle. Specialty colours cost more per litre and require sourcing from the specific manufacturer's paint range.

Does a colour change affect my car's RC or insurance?

Yes. A vehicle colour change needs to be updated in the RC (Registration Certificate) at your local RTO. Your insurance company also needs to be informed. We can advise on the documentation process but the registration update is the customer's responsibility after the paint work is done.

Is the paint work covered under warranty?

Yes. At Carbon and Chrome, paint work carries a workmanship warranty covering defects in application - peeling, bubbling, or colour inconsistency - under normal use conditions. We do not warranty against physical damage to the painted surface after delivery. Warranty terms are confirmed before the job begins.

Do you accept insurance cases for paint work?

Yes. We accept comprehensive insurance claims for accident damage and third-party paint repairs. We prepare a detailed estimate, coordinate with the insurer if needed, and complete the repair to the same standard as a cash job. WhatsApp us photos of the damage for an initial assessment before visiting.
