Ceramic Coating Myths Debunked - What It Actually Does and What It Does Not


Ceramic coating is one of the most misrepresented products in the car care market. Studios oversell it. Marketing materials make claims that the chemistry cannot support. Car owners book expecting one thing and experience something different. At Carbon and Chrome we have these conversations every week, customers who come in after a disappointing experience elsewhere, customers who hesitate to book because they have read conflicting information online, and customers who want a straight answer before spending Rs 15,000 to Rs 40,000.


This guide addresses the most common ceramic coating myths directly. Not to sell coating, to give you the information you need to make a genuinely informed decision.


Myth 1 - Ceramic Coating is Scratch Proof


This is the most damaging myth in the ceramic coating market and the most common source of customer disappointment after application.


Ceramic coating is not scratch proof. It is not even close to scratch proof in the way most customers understand the term.


The 9H hardness rating that appears in almost every ceramic coating product description refers to the pencil hardness scale, a scale used to measure resistance to surface scratching by pencils of increasing graphite hardness from 1B to 9H. A 9H ceramic coating resists marking by a 9H pencil. This does not mean it resists keys, stones, gravel, car park trolleys, or any of the other real-world objects that scratch cars.


What ceramic coating does for scratch resistance is two specific things. It adds a harder surface layer over the clear coat that resists fine washing swirls better than bare clear coat. And it provides a sacrificial surface that takes some of the abrasion that would otherwise go directly to the clear coat. These are genuine and useful benefits. They are not scratch proofing.


A key dragged across a ceramic-coated car leaves a scratch. A stone chip from highway driving at speed penetrates any ceramic coating. A shopping trolley contact in a car park dents the panel regardless of what coating is on the paint.


For physical impact protection against stone chips, the only product that actually works is paint protection film. PPF is a physical barrier. Ceramic coating is a chemical surface treatment. They protect against different things and neither can substitute for the other.


Myth 2 - Ceramic Coating Means You Never Have to Wash Your Car


The hydrophobic properties of ceramic coating are genuine. Water beads and rolls off a coated surface significantly better than bare paint. Road grime and dust adhere less readily to a coated surface than to bare paint. The car stays cleaner for longer between washes.


None of this means the car does not need washing.


In Pune's conditions specifically, construction dust from year-round development across Kharadi, Hinjewadi, Hadapsar, and Baner, industrial fallout from the Pimpri Chinchwad area, and the monsoon's road contamination, a ceramic-coated car still accumulates surface contamination that needs to be removed regularly. What the coating does change is what washing requires. A properly maintained ceramic-coated car needs pH-neutral shampoo, a clean wash mitt, the two-bucket method, and immediate drying after washing. A neglected coated car that is not washed for extended periods in Pune's conditions will still accumulate contamination, water spot minerals will still deposit on the surface from overhead tank washing, and bird droppings left in summer heat will still eventually etch through the coating if not removed.


The coating reduces maintenance. It does not eliminate it.


Myth 3 - All Ceramic Coatings Are the Same


This myth costs car owners money in two directions. Some overpay for a premium coating when an entry product suits their situation. More commonly, they underpay for an inferior coating and get results that reinforce the belief that ceramic coating is overhyped.


Ceramic coatings vary significantly in SiO2 concentration, coating thickness, UV resistance, hardness, hydrophobic performance, and warranty period. The difference between a Rs 3,000 consumer spray coating, a Rs 8,000 entry professional coating, and a Rs 25,000 premium 5-year professional coating is real and meaningful.


Consumer spray coatings sold in bottles for home application contain dilute SiO2 in a carrier solution. They produce visible water beading immediately after application. They last 3 to 6 months. This is not the same product as a professional-grade ceramic coating applied by a trained technician after paint correction.


Professional coatings from 3M, Gyeon, CarPro, Nasiol, and Kovalent are concentrated SiO2 formulations that bond at a molecular level to the clear coat through a condensation reaction. The bond is permanent in a way that a consumer spray coating is not. The hardness, UV resistance, and hydrophobic longevity are categorically different from a consumer product.


Within professional coatings, warranty tiers reflect genuine formulation differences. A 2-year coating and a 5-year coating from the same brand use different SiO2 concentrations and layer thicknesses that produce different longevity in real-world conditions. The 5-year coating costs more because it is a materially different product.


Myth 4 - Ceramic Coating Can Be Applied Without Paint Correction


This is the myth that explains most disappointing ceramic coating results, and most cases where a car owner had ceramic coating applied and found it looked no different from before.


Ceramic coating is optically transparent. It bonds to whatever surface it is applied to and preserves that surface's condition. If the paint has swirl marks, water spot etching, light scratches, or oxidation when the coating is applied, the coating locks in those defects permanently. The defects are visible through the coating for the life of the coating.


Paint correction before ceramic coating is not optional. It is the step that determines whether the coating result is genuinely impressive or merely adequate.

Studios that offer ceramic coating at very low prices in very short timeframes are almost always skipping this preparation. A ceramic coating applied in 2 hours on a car that was washed and driven in was not corrected. The coating may be genuine but the result will be underwhelming because the surface it was applied to was not prepared.


Myth 5 - Ceramic Coating Protects Against Stone Chips


Directly connected to Myth 1 but worth addressing separately because it is the specific misconception that leads to the most concrete disappointment.


Stone chips are physical impact events. A stone or piece of road debris travelling at relative velocity hits the paint surface and physically removes material. The energy of the impact exceeds the adhesion strength of any surface treatment.


Ceramic coating's hardness, even at 10H for graphene ceramic coating, does not absorb impact energy in the way a physical film does. A 9H or 10H hard coating cracks under stone chip impact rather than absorbing it. The chip goes through the coating and into the clear coat or paint beneath.


This is not a ceramic coating quality issue. It is a chemistry limitation that applies equally to every ceramic coating at every price point from every brand.


The product designed to stop stone chips is paint protection film, a flexible thermoplastic urethane film that absorbs impact energy and self-heals from the deformation rather than cracking. PPF is to stone chips what ceramic coating is to UV and water spots, each addresses the specific problem it was designed for.

Quality professional ceramic coatings from certified applicators last their warranty period with appropriate maintenance. A 5-year coating applied correctly on properly prepared paint and maintained with pH-neutral shampoo, no automatic brush car washes, and annual booster applications consistently achieves its warranty period. Beyond that period, the coating needs either a booster refresh or a full recoat to restore its performance.


The "permanent coating" language that appears in some marketing materials refers to the fact that ceramic coating cannot be washed off the way wax is, it requires machine polishing to remove. It does not mean the coating's protective performance is permanent.


Myth 7 - You Can Apply Ceramic Coating Yourself at Home


Consumer DIY ceramic coating products exist and are available at car care shops and online. They are not the same product as professional-grade ceramic coatings and the application process at home cannot replicate the conditions of a professional studio application.


The specific application challenges that a non-professional environment creates:


Temperature and humidity control. Ceramic coating flashes, begins to harden, within minutes of application. The speed of flashing depends on temperature and humidity. In an open garage or outdoor application, temperature and humidity vary across the application and produce inconsistent flashing, visible as streaks, high spots, and uneven clarity in the final result.


Surface preparation. Professional paint correction requires machine polishers, appropriate compounds and pads, paint thickness measurement, and trained technique. A DIY clay bar and hand polish does not produce a surface comparable to professional paint correction.


Product quality. Professional-grade ceramic coatings used in studios have higher SiO2 concentration and produce genuinely better results than consumer products available for DIY application. The performance difference is significant and visible in real-world use.

Myth 8 - A More Expensive Studio Always Means a Better Result


Price is not a reliable proxy for quality in ceramic coating. The result depends on preparation quality, coating product genuineness, and application technique — all of which can be present or absent regardless of what a studio charges.


A studio charging Rs 40,000 for ceramic coating that does not measure paint thickness before correction, does not use genuine certified coating products, and does not apply in a controlled environment will produce inferior results to a certified studio charging Rs 20,000 that does all three correctly.


What to look for instead of price:


Whether the studio can name the specific coating product they are applying and show you the manufacturer's documentation. A genuine 3M or Gyeon certified studio can demonstrate their certification.


Whether the studio includes paint correction in the quote or treats it as an add-on. Any studio that offers ceramic coating without including paint correction is either skipping it or coating uncorrected paint.


Whether the studio works in an enclosed environment. Coating applied outdoors or in a ventilated open space cannot be done correctly.
